Hello Students and Others,
My name is Mr. Blackwell. I am the mathematics teacher at Hayfork High School. I started teaching in the 2015-2016 school year.
Before becoming a math teacher I was a Program Manager at the Humboldt Senior Resource Center. I worked there for five years helping run 3 Congregate Dining Sites, a Home Delivered Meals Program to four communities, and many activities for community living adults. It was a great job and and a wonderful organization to work for.
I changed careers to work with people on the other end of the life spectrum. I have a graduate certificate in Gerontology. When most people think of gerontology they may think of older individuals. Gerontology though is the study of aging through life. My goal as a teacher is to help students as they are at a younger age to make choices that will help them have a more fulfilling, optimal aging life.
As mentioned I am currently teaching. This school year, 2018-2019 I am teaching the following:

I feel my teaching style is a little Eclecticism at times. While I do feel like I lean some toward reconstructionism, and that there are social structures that should be fluid and changing for the betterment of society. Just as the Declaration of Independence is called a living document and is designed to be able to be changed if needs be, so should society to help with optimal functioning of society, while at the same time taking steps to protect those that may be at risk of abuse. That being said I do feel that there is wisdom in order and having standards, similar to Essentialism, and that all students should gain some skill sets to help them to be self-reliant and productive members of society.
